Wednesday morning, February 29, 2012 at St. John's County Chamber of Commerce Annual Members' Breakfast Dr. Richard MacMaster (member of Emmanuel Mennonite Church and organizer with Interfaith Alliance for Immigrant Justice, Gainesville, FL) asks Mr. Dwaine Stevens (Publix Media and Community Relations Manager for North Florida) why Publix - a company that prides itself in family values and giving back to the community - is continually unwilling to meet with the Coalition of Immokalee Workers and join their Campaign for Fair Food. At one point, when Dr. MacMaster suggested that Publix ought to be standing with the farm workers who grow their products rather than ignoring them, Mr. Stevens and the others on stage with him try (unsuccessfully) to stifle laughter after one of them makes what sounds like a joke. At another point in the recording, a woman says in reference to MacMaster's question, "He'll handle it; he's a big boy, yup" -- apparently referring to Mr. Dwain Stevens as "a big boy." Their disrespect and unprofessional reception of a Publix customer with serious concerns about Publix's policy regarding human rights violations in their supply chain comes only a few days before the Coalition of Immokalee Workers and thousands of their Fair Food allies plan to fast and pray for six days (March 5-10) outside of Publix's headquarters in Lakeland, FL.
